Are you the type of person who likes to be busy on your holiday? Do you like doing lots of tours, activities and get to experience as much as possible. If you answered yes, Cairns is the perfect place for you.
Cairns is a small town located in northeast of Australia. The city has a population of about 150,000 people but the region receives thousands of tourists every week seeking to have the best holiday ever. But does Cairns really offer great activities for these holidayers? Yes.
There is so much to do around Cairns, with lots of tours departing Cairns daily. The two main tour destinations are the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, and this is because they are considered World Heritage sites.
The most popular tour in Cairns is to the Great Barrier Reef and this is because Cairns is the front door gateway to the largest coral reef in the world. The Great Barrier Reef has over 2,900 individual reefs extending over 2,300 kilometres. It is so big that it can be seen with the naked eye from space.
There are many different types of boats that travel to the Great Barrier Reef daily. In each one of them visitors have a slightly different experience. For those travellers who would like to see the reef but don’t like getting wet, the pontoon is the perfect option for them.
The pontoon is a floating platform in the middle of the reef with an underwater observatory built underneath it.The platform offers many activities for the day such as glass bottom boat tours, semi-submersible tours, snorkelling tours, scuba diving, helmet diving and much more. There are also helicopter tours available so customers get to see the reef from the top, which is an amazing experience.
Families and elderly people also love the pontoon because they seek a more comfortable environment to spend the day. At the platform there are many undercover tables and chairs and a spacious sundeck.
For visitors who would like another type of experience, there are many other vessels who provide a day trip to the reef visiting 2 or 3 different reef sites. This is a great option for experienced divers, providing them with different reef spots to dive.
If visitors would like to have an overnight experience in the reef, there are several liveaboards in Cairns that offer luxury overnight stay at the reef with a night dive included.

The second World Heritage site that attracts lots of people to Cairns is the Daintree Rainforest. The Daintree Rainforest is considered the oldest rainforest in the world being at least 135 million years old.
The Daintree Rainforest is home for over 3,000 plant species and many native animals such as platypus, echidna, bandicoots, possums, wallabies and kangaroos.
There are many tour operators offering tours to the Daintree rainforest with daily departures. One of them is Cape Tribulation. Cape Tribulation is a beautiful area with gorgeous beaches. Because of the close proximity of the ocean and the Daintree rainforest there is a saying that Cape Tribulation is where the Ocean meets the rainforest.
There are other popular tours to the rainforest in Cairns, the Kuranda Rainforest and the Atherton Tablelands Rainforest.
Kuranda Rainforest is located north of Cairns and to experience this gorgeous rainforest visitors travel one way by skyrail and one way on the train. The skyrail is a gondola that “flies” over the rainforest, and the train passes waterfalls, rainforest, and goes through tunnels and bridges.
Another rainforest tour is The Atherton Tablelands which is a highland region located 90 kilometres from Cairns. At Atherton Tablelands there is a Waterfall and Lake Circuit which is a 17 kilometre driving loop that includes touristy locations such as Millaa Millaa Falls, Fig Tree, Lake Barrine, Lake Eacham and Lake Tinaroo.

But it doesn’t stop there, Cairns offers so many other activities. For the adrenaline seekers, there are many adventurous activities in Cairns, such as White Water Rafting, Bungy Jumping, Skydiving, Hot Air Ballooning, Horse Riding, ATV Riding, Water Sports and much more. Visitors can spend a whole week doing these “crazy” activities.
Helicopter flights are also a popular tour attraction in Cairns. Helicopter scenic flights over the reef and the rainforest are quite an amazing experience. From the top you get to see all the reef formations and their beautiful colours.
For those people who want to go a bit further out and explore far north Queensland a bit more, there are tours from Cairns to Cooktown. Cooktown is famous for being the first white settlement in Australia, when Captain James Cook’s ship hit a reef system, part of the Great Barrier Reef, just off the coast north of Cape Tribulation.
Anyway, If you are planning a holiday, you should definitely consider Cairns.
